Zero Tolerance Policy

< Back to policies & procedures

The NHS operates a Zero Tolerance Policy with regard to violence and abuse, and the Practice has the right to remove violent patients from its list with immediate effect in order to safeguard staff, patients, and others. Violence in this context includes actual or threatened physical violence or verbal abuse that causes fear for a person's safety. In such cases, we will notify the patient in writing of their removal from the list and record both the removal and the circumstances leading to it in the patient’s medical records.

The Zero tolerance Policy also covers online behaviour. Derogatory or hurtful comments about the practice or our staff, when posted online, can harm the trust and respect needed for a good doctor–patient relationship, and may lead to removal of patients from our list. If such comments are brought to our attention, you will be asked to remove them. We value feedback and encourage patients to share concerns directly with us so that we have the chance to listen, respond, and, where appropriate, make improvements. If you wish to make a complaint, please use our complaint’s procedure. We will only respond to complaints in accordance with practice policy.

Important

Where patients are disruptive and display aggressive and/or intimidating behaviour and refuse to leave the premises, staff are instructed to dial 999 for Police assistance, and charges may then be brought against these individuals.
